Our Story
Saferoom & Bunker Co. was founded in Auckland in 2018 by a structural engineer who had spent the previous decade working on hardened government and defence infrastructure across the Pacific. The gap he identified was simple: the engineering knowledge required to build a proper underground structure existed, but there was no pathway for private individuals to access it.
The business launched with four production bunker plans. Within the first year, enquiries were arriving from the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The product and the market had found each other immediately.
We have never sought publicity. Our clients do not discuss their projects publicly, and neither do we. What has grown the practice over eight years is the quality of the engineering and the privacy with which we operate — two things that are not in tension. They are the same value, expressed differently.
Today we maintain a catalog of four production bunker plans, available worldwide under license. Beyond that, we offer two further tiers of engagement: a full turnkey build service where our New Zealand–based crew constructs on your existing property, and a complete acquisition service where we locate, assess, and purchase land on your behalf — with legal handling managed by our registered New Zealand solicitor — before our construction team takes over. Every engagement, at every tier, is covered by our standard NDA from first contact.

Plans licensed to principals in the United States and Australia within three years of founding. The worldwide build license model established and scaling.
The Redoubt becomes our most-licensed plan
Demand for family-rated, multi-zone capability accelerated. The Redoubt — our 96m² family bunker design — became and remains our most-licensed plan.
Full-service tiers launched
Turnkey Build and Full Property Acquisition services introduced. Our registered NZ solicitor begins handling end-to-end land purchase and build engagements.
The Sovereign released
Apex-tier modular survival estate plan. Multi-compound architecture for 20–40+ persons. First Full Acquisition clients settled on New Zealand properties.
500+ plans licensed
Milestone: 500 plan licenses issued across 9 countries. Turnkey and Acquisition engagements now account for a growing share of total project volume.
How We Work
Every plan in our catalog carries a NZ Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) stamp. The drawings are not architectural concepts — they are construction documents. Your contractor can take them to ground.
Every engagement is covered by NDA from first contact. We do not publish client names, project locations, or images of completed structures. Your plan, your builder, your bunker — and no one else's business.
Our plans have been built across 9 countries on 5 continents. The design is done in New Zealand; construction is yours to place. The included consultation adapts the engineering to your local soil, climate, and code environment.
Our offices are in Auckland and Wellington. Our design and engineering teams are entirely New Zealand-based, with access to some of the most rugged and varied terrain conditions on earth to test and validate structural performance.
The four plans in our catalog were developed from direct construction experience across multiple countries and soil conditions. They are not theoretical — they are production documents refined by every build. The Citadel alone has been built in four countries. Each build informs the next revision of the drawings.
We are not a construction company. We are a design and engineering firm. You take our plans to your own trusted contractor, or use our NZ build team if you're building here. You control the supply chain. You control who knows what.
